The Law Enforcement Torch Run ® for Special Olympics New York brings together nearly 6, police and peace officers from close to agencies in a leg relay that carries the Flame of Hope across the state each year. These Guardians of the Flame team up with Special Olympics athletes to symbolize courage and celebrate diversity.   The COVID pandemic scuttled this year’s summer Special Olympics competition, but local law enforcement agencies are still running to raise money for athletes.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is an annual event held in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 20 nations throughout the world. The run generates more than $ million annually for Special Olympics, an agency that enables more than one million children and adults with developmental disabilities to participate in year-round sports activities.   The Law Enforcement Torch Run began at noon from this location, and the participants ran from Sunriver to the Old Mill District in Bend, traveling miles. Known as Guardians of the Flame, law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes carry the “Flame of Hope” into Opening Ceremonies of local competitions.
